“Escape From Fire: The Migration Crisis of the 21st Century” is a series of digital prints focusing on the current tragic migrations from violence in the Eastern and Western hemispheres. My aspiration in creating these prints is twofold. First I hope the images inspire compassion and empathy so the viewer can comprehend the tribulations and tragic circumstances for the multitude of people displaced by violence, poverty and global warming.
These are women I have photographed over a period of time. In this series they represents the archetypal relationship of feminine principle to the basic elements of the cosmos: Earth, Air, Water, Fire. Layered within each composition are images and symbols that are relevant (for me) to both the personal and the archetypal narrative of each image and each element. In working with these principles my over arching statement is actually a conflicting duality: On the one hand I believe that the feminine principles honor all elements which are needed to restore a natural balance on our planets so we may preserve our life here. On the other hand there is a subtext that points to how the desecration of these principles are impacting the most vulnerable on this planet. My woman in "Fire" is grieving for the impact that the aggressions of fire have had on all of us; and the woman in "Water" is a Kuna islander I filmed years ago who lives on an island that will soon be under the sea.
This is a series that is being developed in response to my concern about privacy we are losing through our technology. I'm thinking about it!
These images were an experiment; and are a reflection of my curiosity, sense of humor, philosophy and psychology. I took some images made by NASA of "outer" space, inverting them and creating inner space reflections, pondering the universe as I worked on them.
